SENATOR SMITH: Did you see Mr. Andrews after the boat struck?
MR. RAY: No, sir, I did not. . . .
SENATOR SMITH: When you got to lifeboat No. 9 . . . what took place?
MR. RAY: I went to the rail and looked over and saw the first boat leaving the ship on the starboard side. By that time I was feeling rather cold, so I went down below again, to my bedroom, the same way that I came up.
SENATOR SMITH: What did you do then?
MR. RAY: I got my overcoat on. I went along E deck. There was nobody in No. 3 when I left.
SENATOR SMITH: No. 3 room?
MR. RAY: No. 3 room, where I slept. I went along E deck and forward, and the forward part of E deck was under water. I could just manage to get through the doorway into the main stairway. I went across to the other side of the ship where the passengers' cabins were; saw nobody there. I looked to see where the water was and it was corresponding on that side of the ship to the port side. I walked leisurely up to the main stairway, passed two or three people on the way, saw the two pursers in the purser's office and the clerks busy at the safe taking things out and putting them in bags, and just then Mr. Rothschild left his stateroom and I waited for him—
SENATOR SMITH: Did you know him?
MR. RAY: Yes; I had waited on him on the Olympic.
SENATOR SMITH: Let us fix the place. You were still on E deck?
MR. RAY: Yes, sir.
SENATOR SMITH: And at his stateroom?
MR. RAY: I did not say that I was in any stateroom then —
SENATOR SMITH: I thought you saw Mr. Rothschild?
MR. RAY: I had come through D deck and then C deck and I saw Mr. Rothschild.
SENATOR SMITH: All right; go ahead.
MR. RAY: I spoke to him and asked him where his wife was. He said she had gone off in a boat. I said, "This seems rather serious." He said, "I do not think there is any occasion for it." So we walked leisurely up the stairs until I got to A deck and went through the door. I went out there onto the open deck and along to No. 9 boat.

LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu M. Andrews après le heurt du navire?
M. RAY : Non, monsieur, je ne l’ai pas vu.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Quand vous êtes arrivé au canot de sauvetage no 9 [...] que s’est-il passé?
M. RAY : Je suis allé au bastingage et j’ai vu le premier canot qui quittait le navire du côté tribord. À ce moment-là, j’avais plutôt froid, alors je suis redescendu en bas, dans ma cabine, par le même chemin par lequel je suis monté.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qu’avez-vous fait ensuite?
M. RAY : J’ai mis mon pardessus. Je suis allé sur le pont E. Il n’y avait personne à la cabine no 3 quand je suis parti.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : La cabine no 3?
M. RAY : La cabine no 3, où j’ai dormi. Je suis allé sur le pont E et à l’avant, et la partie avant du pont E était sous l’eau. Je pouvrais juste passer la porte dans l’escalier principal. Je suis allé de l’autre côté du navire où se trouvaient les cabines des passagers; je n’y ai vu personne. J’ai cherché à voir où se trouvait l’eau et elle correspondait de ce côté du navire au côté bâbord. J’ai marché tranquillement jusqu’à l’escalier principal, j’ai croisé deux ou trois personnes sur le chemin, j’ai vu les deux commissaires de bord dans le bureau du commissaire de bord et les commis occupés au coffre-fort prendre des choses et les mettre dans des sacs, juste quand M. Rothschild a quitté sa cabine et je l’ai attendu...
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Le connaissiez-vous?
M. RAY : Oui, je l’avais servi sur l’Olympic.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Revenons à cet endroit. Vous étiez encore sur le pont E?
M. RAY : Oui, monsieur.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Et à sa cabine?
M. RAY : Je n’ai pas dit que j’étais dans une cabine—
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Je croyais que vous aviez vu M. Rothschild?
M. RAY : Je suis passé par le pont D, puis le pont C et j’ai vu M. Rothschild.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Très bien, allez-y.
M. RAY : Je lui ai parlé et je lui ai demandé où était sa femme. Il m’a dit qu’elle était partie dans un canot. J’ai répondu : « Cela semble plutôt grave. » Il a dit, "Je ne pense pas qu’il y ait une occasion pour cela." Alors nous avons marché tranquillement dans les escaliers jusqu’à ce que je sois arrivé au pont A et passé par la porte. Je suis allé sur le pont extérieur et le long du canot no 9.
